Master of Arts in Journalism & Mass Communication

Introduction
The course structure includes News writing, Print Media, Television Journalism, Radio Journalism, Photojournalism, Online Journalism, Communication Research, Editing and so on. Besides, new and market-driven courses like Advertising, Public Relations and Corporate Communication and Urdu Journalism are also being taught. The Department also offers various optional papers and their number has been increased so that the students can opt for their area of interest. These include Business Reporting, Development Communication, Media in Peace and Conflict Building, International Communication, Media & Society etc. For a deeper understanding, students are trained in the use of different media including the IUST’s campus newspaper, radio and Television studio, regular film Screenings, interactive plays, discussions, debates, seminars as well as simulations.

It is the media that is the source of all the information, be it print media like the newspapers and magazines; electronic media like the Internet or Audio/Visual Media like Television and Radio. With changes in the society, the mass media has undergone several changes that have also increased the career choices and paths in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication. Journalism is a highly responsible job, and highly interesting at the same time. Becoming a journalist puts an individual in the middle of exciting world and events be it politics, art, economics, sports, entertainment, history, science, business, wars, crimes and investigative stories. The main objective of this course is to produce skilled and trained journalists for all the streams of Journalism and Mass Communication who are committed to the issues of ethics, social relevance and human rights. The course exposes the students to recent developments in media and communication. The syllabus of the course is designed for a career in any of the above mentioned streams of Mass Communications as reporters, news writers, copy editors, photojournalists, Corporate Communicators, development journalists, Advertising and PR professionals, documentary/film makers, etc.
The students of the department have been working on different positions in various reputed national and international media organizations including Aljazeera, DNA, PTI, Tehalka, IANS, Associate Press, Indian Express, Barcroft and Mail Today, as well as regional news organizations that include Greater Kashmir, Rising Kashmir, Kashmir Life, Kashmir Reader, Kashmir Monitor, Kashmir Times, Kashmir Images, Doordarshan Srinagar and Radio Kashmir Srinagar.
